Methyl Sulfonyl Methane (MSM)

Uses:

MSM is a widely used ingredient in the dietary supplement industry. Along with Glucosamine Hydrochloride and Chondroitin Sulfate, it has been long been taken in combination with these two well known ingredients to help with joint pain relief. It also is a great biologically active source of sulfur as a supplement that is used in human metabolism.

Manufacture:

Pharmore Ingredients conducts ongoing robust auditing process to ensure that we are working with manufacturing plants that are committed to making a quality program and follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs). We ensure that they implement a continuous improvement program with critical double checks throughout their process.

Typical Process Flow:

MSM is a chemical synthesis starting with DMSO and Hydrogen Peroxide.

Liquid starting raw materials are blended with hydrogen peroxide.

Methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM) forms as crystals and settles to the bottom of the mixing tank.

The crystals of MSM are placed in a centrifuge to remove excess water.

The crystals are rinsed with deionized water to further purify the MSM.

MSM is placed in a vacuum dryer to dry thoroughly.

The dried MSM is milled, screened and passed over a metal detector to remove any foreign materials before packaging.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Do you offer various particle sizes?

  • We have two common particle sizes that we routinely stock. One is a powder that is closer to a 20 Mesh and the other is a finer powder that is closer to a 40-80 Mesh.

2. Should MSM exhibit a sulfur smell?

  • There is a characteristic low sulfur smell. A strong sulfur odor could be the smell of Methylsulfonic acid that occurs when there is an over reaction between the DMSO and Hydrogen Peroxide. This can be prevented with suitable manufacturing process controls on timing and PH.

3. What is Chromatographic Purity and how does that differ from the Assay?

  • According to USP monograph, Chromatographic Purity is calculated by taking 100% minus the Total Impurities. Since Total Impurities cannot be more than 0.2%, then Chromatographic Purity cannot be less than 99.8% by calculation. The Assay of MSM is the potency determined via GC test methodology defined in the USP monograph. When developing a finished product, you should use the Assay not the Chromatographic Purity level.

4. Is there an excipient or carrier included with the MSM provided?

  • Pharmore offers MSM without the addition of excipients or carriers. Upon request, we can offer material with Silicon Dioxide but this is not routinely stocked.
