Majerus Speaks at CRN/CHPA

Warren Majerus, NSF Auditor and VP of Quality Assurance for Pharmore Ingredients, Riverton, UT spoke on 8/28/07 at a joint meeting of CRN and CHPA (Council for Responsible Nutrition/Consumer Health Care Products Assn.) in Washington, DC.

The purpose of the seminar was to present an industry interpretation of the recently passed FDA Regulations covering Good Manufacturing Practices for Dietary Supplements.

A major concern before the regulations were released had been that testing to show finished product compliance would be required, even though validated methods may not exist for complex formulas. Majerus presented “Best Practices for Determining That Ingredients/Products Meet Compliance When No Validated Method Exists.” His response to this issue is that if no validated method exists for testing finished retail products, then raw material supplier certification programs, incoming raw material testing and process validation are critical components for assuring finished product compliance.

Majerus emphasized that quality starts with raw materials so manufacturers need to closely scrutinize their suppliers by conducting on site audits, requiring that suppliers undergo 3 rd party validation and periodically supply independent laboratory results for their ingredients.
